Mattapoisett Preserves

Before we get into the preserves we have visited in Mattapoisett, we will first share a couple pictures from our drive but not part of any preserve. This Great Egret was showing off its neck's flexibility.

This long somewhat narrow property possesses some distinct areas. We first walked through some woods.

Then we stopped at their bird watching platform that is roughly in the middle of the property. It overlooks an area with a lot of marsh grasses that would provide good cover for small birds.

Marsh grasses

At the end is a marshy point with 4 Osprey nests in view. One was particularly active, with the couple doing some nest augmenting.

Notice that in both the above picture and the one below, the Osprey in the nest is watching the one flying.

After watching the Osprey for a while, we walked back through the woods.

Munro Preserve is a little seaside Mattapoisett park. There are a number of benches for sitting while watching the boats at the adjacent marina and dock. We did not take any pictures when we visited there.

Ned's Point Lighthouse

This is a small city park, and was clearly a very popular spot for morning walks with the family dog. But the main point of interest is definitely the lighthouse itself.

Neds Point Lighthouse and Park

Notice the informational sign to the right of the lighthouse? It includes some historical pictures of the lighthouse.

Information sign at Neds Point Lighthouse

The sign made us do a double take. The lighthouse had windows! It also had a large lightkeeper residence, replaced by a different residence, but both of those are gone. But the windows should still be there. So, we looked again at the lighthouse.

The top window is obvious since it is used as a cable access point. If you look more closely at the picture, you can see the outline of another window directly below obvious one but close to the ground.

This visit to Ned's Point Lighthouse was during the COVID-19 pandemic (May 2020). There was a portable electronic sign, the type you see along highways, with a 'Stay Safe Wear Masks' message. As we were about to leave, a Mattapoisett policeman came and got it ready to move to a new location, continuing to spread the safety message!
