While sunset is often thought of as the end of something, it is also the start of evening or night. This is clear when you watch a moonrise, in particular the rising of a full moon. So our pictures from this year's trip to Boothbay Harbor, Maine will start with a page with photographs of the moonrise ... and some sunset pictures for good measure.
Knowing that Pemaquid Point Lighthouse has a good view east, we went there for the moonrise. While we patiently waited for the moon, we were able to get some pictures of the lighthouse with late-day sunshine. The 1st picture is looking back from the water edge towards the lighthouse.
Looking from the other side of the lighthouse, and a closer view:
But what is that inside the lantern room? This requires a closer look.
At least if you have watched any Doctor Who episodes, you will recognize what is on the ceiling as an alien. When we looked again later ...
it was gone. We were left wondering where it went. Meanwhile, though, we could see the change in the light as moonrise approached.
Now it was time for the main event. Here is the moon as it just comes into visibility over Monhegan Island.
As it got darker and the moon rose higher, the lighthouse on Monhegan Island came on. It was dwarfed by the large moon.
The moon could be seen through the windows of the foghorn house that is behind the lighthouse.
We continued watching the rest of the daylight fade as the moon rose higher.
On a different evening, we went to Ocean Point and watched the sunset. We did not even notice the Burnt Island Lighthouse, visible in this picture, since we were distracted by the clouds and sun playing together.
There was a pretty sky that evening.
A young couple was enjoying the romance of the pretty sky.
And it was time to fly off to bed.
Here are a handful of other late-day or early-morning photographs.

And we will finish this page with its star (so to speak):
