Moods (Boothbay Harbor 2022)

This page features photographs some of the varied looks, or ‘moods’, for the area. At the bottom of the page is a link to a video showing all of these plus a few additional photographs.

One of the classic views is fog by the ocean. Coastal villages set the scene. One can imagine artists taking out their easels to capture the view, vacationers sitting on the decks drinking their morning coffee, and seafarers getting up in the morning and hoping the fog doesn’t hinder their activities. Or we can even imagine some photographers capturing some lovely mood pictures.

Adding in a large sailboat moves us into the water.

This person working on opening up the Squirrel Island is not going to wait for the fog to lift. He heads out on his journey and is swallowed up by the fog as he recedes into the distance.

One of the interesting things about fog at the ocean is how quickly it an come ago, and how abrupt the transitions can be. These boats are in sunshine but tongues of fog are licking at the island beyond them.

It is even more pronounced in this next photo, taken at Five Islands. The fog is gently wrapping around these islands, leaving us to wonder if the harbor will be closed in with fog or will open up.

Looking the other way, we could see a wall of fog behind the boats in the foreground.

A mile and a half away from the sea’s edge had sunshine with clouds, instead. Looking at this view, contemplating taking a boat out, an unprepared seafarer could be very surprised by the dense fog not far away. (Todd’s Landing, Georgetown, Maine)

Going back to the coast there was again thick fog. These photographs were taken on Georgetown Island. There was once a town landing at the tip of the island, but now there are only hints that it once existed (including the nearby street name). Across the Kennebec River you can dimly glimpse the historic Fort Popham.

Towards the end of the day, the light softens and gives the scene a slightly dreamy quality.

In the previous picture you can see a hint at one of the lovely sky colors that sometimes shows, what our aunt calls ‘Sky Blue Pink’.

This next photograph includes two lighthouses (Cuckold and Seguin), ready to light the way home for tired sailors.

This sunset couldn’t decide if it wanted to be blue, pink, orange, or yellow so it became a Sunset Rainbow.

Here is a calmer sunset, with the setting sun illuminating evidence of a different method of travel (the contrail of a jet).

A slightly higher evening sun provided yet another mood for our ocean visits. These next three photographs were all taken from Ocean Point, with the last light of day shining on the water and the foam from the waves. There were many birds making their journies to a safe spot for the night.

After sunset the lights start to come on in the seaside town and on the water. In the first photo, someone has their boat as their safe spot for the night. In addition to the lights on the boat itself you can see various navigation lights, either lighthouses or buoys.

Light up the town! The store on the upper floor, Eventide, is where we got cheese, wine, and salads during our vacation.

Even the same scene can have different moods. The pedestrian footbridge in Boothbay Harbor has lights that sparkle in the night, only to be outshone by the larger lights illuminating the path for anyone enjoying the nighttime air.

The last photograph for this page goes back to the fog scenes.
