In addition to being (or perhaps because it is) such a lovely area, Boothbay Harbor has a lot of art. There are many galleries in and around the town. Even from our first visit, in 2015, we noticed sculptures ‘in the wild’ (such as in this picture from the 2015 trip report, taken in front of the town library). A few years after that first visit, Sculpture Boothbay was formed and created a sculpture trail. The trail is a collaboration between the artists and the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, and the sculptures are available for purchase! There are also sculptures that aren't part of the official trail. One of the first sculptures we see is the one right at Topside Inn, called ‘Glacier’.
Down the hill from the inn is a green where we have often seen dogs, and across the street is a shop for pet supplies. Appropriately, they placed the sculpture ‘Big Dog’ there. It is big, as you can see from the nearby road sign.
There were multiple owl sculptures. One was a bit more abstract, another more realistic.
Either way, it is enough to cause this rabbit to run for cover.
Then there was this bear statue (which we don't think was part of the sculpture trail), which makes the birds fly off.
Flying brings us to Mercury, the messenger god. This sculpture likely represents his winged shoe.
Nearby was another sculpture that is all about feeling the wind in your hair. It is called ‘Soapbox Racer’. And yes, the wheels do move.
One of our favorite sculptures is called ‘Sun and Moon’.
This old sailor stands watch in front of an inn.
Down the road from him are a couple of nudes (one being inside the gallery window).
This sculpture is at another gallery; we did not write down the name.
‘The Seeker’ greets visitors as they approach the downtown.
And these trees are one of the last as you leave the downtown area.
One of our favorite sculptures was Venus. She was not part of the trail, but was under the canopy of Brady’s restaurant at the head of the harbor.
We will leave this page with a photo from the Maine Botanical Garden, as a bit of a teaser since the Garden also has many sculptures.
