Flowers, Macro, and Other

Finishing the trip report for our May 2025 visit to Boothbay Harbor is this page with a variety of pictures. About half are from the Botanical Gardens, plus we have other flower pictures that we added to the mix. So we will start there, at the entrance to the Maine Botanical Gardens.

Looking down a walkway with plants along the side, ending at the entrance building.

While the primary attraction to the Botanical Gardens is plants ...

Three white and yellow daffodils

Dusty pink hellebore flowers against green leaves

... there are certainly other interesting items in the Gardens. This Heron statue near the entrance is one of those items.

And we always enjoy saying hello to the Cod Father.

A statue of a fish in the woods

We enjoyed seeing more plants (Shredded Umbrella Plant, and a fern).

A fiddlehead

These little butterfly and bird houses probably don't get a lot of use since there are so many people wandering in those areas.

Two yellow and one pink butterfly house sit amid plants.

A small birdhouse with a heart shaped entrance is on a pole.

This Eastern Painted Turtle was relatively bold, for a turtle, and did not immediately dive into the water when we came near the pond.

More plants.

Some pale hellebore flowers

Looking down at a tulip

The little trails through the woods had decorative markers.

A wood signpost has a fern engraved on it.

Anne was not a decorative marker.

Anne is looking through a stone post with a large hole, holding her arms out to the sides.

Plants.

A bud on a tree.

An unopened flower

The stone table in the Fairy Garden area has changed a bit. Once the stools were carved into the shape of mushrooms. Now they are rustic and interestingly shaped tree trunks.

Paul is sitting on a stone table in the woods.

A new art installation featured mounds that resemble oyster middens.

The art piece has the words You're Right! This is native land

We met The Troll Doctor. This young woman was using some various power tools to fix up the trolls and help them last longer. In keeping with the theme, they use reclaimed wood in their repairs.

Paul stands under the bent arm of one of the Trolls, talking to a woman holding a power tool.

We will transition away from the Botanical Gardens with a flower from Pemaquid Lighthouse.

A flower that is almost opening.

That was taken using the mini tripod, as were these focus stacked photographs.

Despite the fact that Topside Inn was sold shortly before we went, the breakfasts were still as excellent. Here is Paul at the breakfast spread.

Paul is standing next to a tall table that has food and flowers on it.

One morning the featured breakfast had scallions in it, so they made Paul two breakfasts!

There is a plate with waffles and a plate with omelets for breakfast.

Rebekah, who helped manage the inn, was still there. She makes an excellent omelet.

Rebekah is wearing a bright blue shirt and is making omelets.

Here are some more small scale subjects.

Tiny strands of a plant have dew drops on them.

Many water droplets cover an invisible spider web.

Tiny thin red plants or mushrooms rise up from a moss-covered surface.

Here are some more larger scale subjects. For supper a couple of nights, we enjoyed salads from Eventide, which we ate while reviewing the pictures taken that day.

A selfie of Anne and Paul

And a couple miscellaneous pictures from downtown Boothbay Harbor, with messages that somehow seem related to each other.

A life preserver that says ONWARD

A boat named Can't Wait

Three more plant pictures.

A small fern with delicate leaves unfurling

A plant with 3 different fern-like branches

An abstract style photograph of Queen Anne's Lace from last year.

And finally, a few less foggy pictures of Boothbay Harbor.

Looking at Boothbay Harbor and McFarland Island

This is taken from the inn.

A night view across the lawn and to Boothbay Harbor with lights visible in the houses and on the water.

This is the same view. A boat was traversing the harbor while this long exposure picture was being taken. The result is what looks like a long bar of light above the water, travelling behind a small island (Tumbler Island). The red light above and to the left of that bar of light is a navigation buoy. The white light above it is Cuckolds Lighthouse. And the red light on the right end of the bar of light is Burnt Island Lighthouse. Continuing left from the bar of light, there are some other lights in the distance. Those are on Squirrel Island.

A darker picture of the same view, but with a bar of light going behind an island.
