Page 8: Other

Last page of this trip report. Getting back to waterfalls, a bit further away from where we stayed is another New York State Park, Letchworth. The scope here is fairly grand, with a deep canyon and three large waterfalls: lower, middle, and upper. The park has one main long road, with trails through the woods and some other roads, plus camping. Unfortunately it also has hunting when we were there, so we didn't venture into the woods.

You can see the deep canyon that the river has cut.

There were some nice park areas.

The lower falls were expansive.

Here are the middle and upper falls. You can see the mist they create, and a train track that passes over the gorge.

A businessman the 1800s, William Letchworth, bought some of the land and built his house there. He bequeathed the land to the state, and this formed the start of this park. His former house is now a seasonal inn. This would have been the view from his yard.

The park mimics Lewiston-Auburn with a Balloon Festival!

In addition to the state parks, there are many other waterfalls in this area. The town of Montour Falls is just south of Watkins Glen. The main street there leads directly to a waterfall, She-Qua-Ga. They have a nice little park in front of the fall.

And at the border of the town is another lovely fall, Aunt Sarah's Falls. This is one of the prettiest water falls you will ever see, just sitting there at the edge of the road - easy to miss if you blink at the wrong time. We were lucky to view it with a strong water flow, and it was very impressive.

Another great by the side of the road falls is Hector Falls.

At the north end of Keuka Lake is a water outlet that leads over to Seneca Lake. A 7 mile trail has been built along this route, and there are a few falls along it. We did not have the time to do any hiking on the trail, but did drive to the remnants of a mill and see the fall there.

Thank you for viewing our trip report. We will close with a couple sunset photographs.
